New Senators Elected
Well, the ballots are in, and the results of the 2006 Student Elections were announced on Tuesday, September 12. Just to help the entire student body get to know their new senators, The Profile held exclusive celebrity interviews with each of them.
Freshman Lin Poff was elected as the New Student Senator. When asked why he decided to run for Senate, Poff said, "I decided to run for Student Senate because I like to be involved. I like to help people and institutions I care about, and I like to see things get done - not just done, but done well. I like working with and for people. I like a challenge."
As for Poff's intentions for the future, he said, "My plans are to be open-minded to new ideas from the whole student body (particularly the freshmen, as they are the ones I'll be representing), to present such ideas in meetings, to work to achieve the goals set by the Senate, and generally, to help the Hendrix freshmen and the entire Hendrix community by creating Senate actions and supporting Senate decisions. Of course, as the new kid on the block, I am prepared to learn quickly and to be ready to do the job right from the start. It is my job to do what is right, what is best, what is wanted by the students here at Hendrix; I intend to meet (and indeed, surpass) every expectation made of me because of the trust and faith given to me to fulfill this position and my duties."
Regarding Poff's feelings on being elected: "Naturally, I'm honored to have been elected Freshman Senator, especially by the largest freshman class to enter Hendrix. I am also pleased to have won the election against such worthy opponents, whom I now consider friends. I had expected to meet lots of fellow students as I campaigned, and in doing so I have become more and more impressed with the quality of individuals who make up our freshman class. That such a group has entrusted me with this role both honors and humbles me."
Freshman Brandy Trainham was elected to be the new Raney Senator. Trainham said, "I'm very excited to be on Senate and represent Raney. This is my passion - I was on Student Council for all four years of high school, and I'm glad to be doing it again here in college."
Junior Katie Pearce is the new Houses Senator. Pearce said, "I've been wanting to get involved with Senate for a while now, and I am really happy to be able to represent the New Houses. My plans are to listen to the concerns of the Houses residents and represent them well."
In addition to having three new senators, Senate also has some new SoCo and MDC Representatives.
The New Student SoCo Rep is Chelsey White; the Martin SoCo Rep is Ken Yang; the Hardin SoCo Rep is Blake Burrows; the Veasey SoCo Rep is Sarah Richardson; the Raney SoCo Rep is Missy Moore. The Veasey MDC Rep is Rebecca Callahan; the Apartments MDC Rep is Krista Messer; as for the New Student MDC Rep, there were 29 votes for 29 different people, leading to an official "No Decision."
Senate Plans Open Forum Meetings
Last Tuesday Senate President Russ Montgomery announced a new plan to increase student involvement in Senate and its endeavors.
"The Senators felt that there has been a lack of enthusiasm, we don't have much focus, and students don't really have a good feel of what Senate is discussing," Montgormery said.
The first idea was a bi-weekly e-mail from Montgomery letting students in on what Senate was up to.
"We felt that if we did that, we should give students an outlet to discuss those things in a welcoming and amiable environment," Montgomery said.
"So the open forum will happen every other week and will be preceded by an e-mail from me welcoming people to come and giving a few ideas for discussion that the executive committee will come up with.
"Rules of Order will be suspended, and the meeting will feel more like a discussion."
The first open forum is planned to take place in the Burrow on Sept. 25.
"We're having a Town Hall meeting with an open floor for any issues or concerns students have about the Village," Montgomery said. "Afterwards, Senate will try to identify the primary areas of concern and around those areas create committees to look into them further and make recommendations.
"Our goal is to have a resolution with all the concerns in one document to be published and presented to the senior staff, faculty, and Board of Trustees. We want to be able to confidently speak on behalf of the student body and what we think of all this."
Montgomery said that if the open forum works well, then it will become the standard procedure for Senate meetings.
"I think people at Hendrix are usually pretty vocal about things that piss them off and hopefully the e-mail with bullet point issues and open forum will organize complaints and something will actually come of them.
"'Productive bitching' is the idea," he said.
Sophomore Musings Series to Replace Traditional Retreat
After several years of hosting a sophomore retreat that lacked participation, the Lilly Office has introduced a series of conversations with faculty and staff called "Sophomore Musings," to take place at Something Brewing Coffee House throughout the year.
"We asked, what can we do for the new sophomores without a weekend stay away?" said Dr. Peg Falls-Corbit of the Lilly Office. "We came up with the idea and wrote faculty for questions and offers to help."
The conversations will feature a few faculty and staff members to offer different prospectives on different topics at each session.
"It's not a lecture," Falls-Corbit said, "any sophomore can come to coffee and discussion." The first meeting is on Sept. 25 at Something Brewing at 4pm.
