Over the past few weeks, a group of United Methodist Youth scholars have been working diligently on a way to replace their spring meeting as well as raise money for the Mount Eagle Annual Contribution. The result: a UMY Coffeehouse. The annual contribution goes to a fund at Mount Eagle Retreat Center that assists with aid and repairs for victims of tornado damage. The scholars have set a goal of $1000, which Chaplain Wayne Clark remarked was "impressive and not easy, especially for a group of college students."

The coffeehouse was initiated as a replacement for the scholars' Spring Meeting, where normally the group finishes and reviews any business accumulated during the semester. The enterprising juniors who orchestrated and executed this event included Gary Berner, Jared Keahey, Valerie Kimbrough, Lizzy Price, and Kelly Robbins. It seems that all around the students and faculty enjoyed the opportunity to mix, mingle, and be entertained in a less formal setting than general academic life. Even though the coffeehouse was initiated as a fun way to replace the generally obligatory meeting, Kimbrough expressed that "[Clark] seemed excited and we would all like to see such a great mix of professors and UMY continue."

Though referred to in advertisements as the first annual, Kimbrough said "over the past couple of years there were other UMY Coffeehouses, but they may have phased out due to low attendance or other circumstances."

This may, however, may be the first coffeehouse of its type. A unique set of acts and homemade goodies brought forth quite an audience. Performances included several folk music numbers, as well as some alternative and classics brought by talented Hendrix musicians. Among these were sophomore Zach Beal, senior James Szenher, the duo of Keahey and Berner, a band led by Dr. Jay McDaniel, and several other professors including Dr. Ralph McKenna, Dr. Mark Sutherland, and Dr. Joe Lombardi.

Instead of passing around a plate or bucket, visitors were given the chance to discreetly donate at the door on their way in or out. Visitors were treated to a nice relaxed setting with muted candlelight, homemade cookies and cakes, and, of course, several pots of coffee.
