Is apathy a problem at Hendrix? It appears that this may be the case, as in spite of how involved Hendrix students claim to be in their various activities around campus, a certain lack of concern seems to be prevalent here - at least when it comes to filling positions that require a certain amount of responsibility, such as Social Committee Director of Logistics and Sound.
Everyone noticed the repetitive emails announcing that filing had been extended again and again. The position of SoCo Director of Logistics and Sound was one position in particular that no one applied for until almost a month after filing for SoCo executive positions began. There could be a genuine lack of interest in holding such a position for SoCo, or it could be that while students expect to be able to enjoy various events such as Campus Kitty throughout the year, no one actually wants to be the one to do the work.
Students' opinions on the matter differed.
Senior Tim Hansen mentioned that students may care about getting things done, but are just uninformed when it comes to exactly what they would be applying for when it comes to positions, since many just ignore the ads they see.
"Students walk by flyers every day. We're accustomed to being bombarded with every type of advertisement. So, in general, I don't think that people realize just what the work entails, not knowing whether or not they are qualified to do it," he said.
Sophomore Amanda Lloyd agreed that laziness is not the problem amongst students, but suggested that the fear of responsibility may have played a part in the all-around lack of interest.
"It's not that people don't care, but nobody wants such responsibility after the screw-up that happened last year with the yearbook," she said.
On the other hand, freshman John Beaton restores faith in the prospect of students just not giving a damn. "Personally, I just deleted all the emails, because I had no desire to run for any of the positions," he said.
