If you like barbecue, Cake, or Costa Rica, Memphis, Tenn. is the place you will want to visit during the month of May. Every year, Memphis has a month long celebration in the honor of whichever country has been chosen as the theme of the festival. This year, the Memphis in May International Festival is honoring Costa Rica. Exhibits and performers are brought into Memphis to provide an authentic cultural experience for those in the area.

The Festival kicks off during the first weekend of May with the Beale Street Music Festival. The festivities start Friday evening with a line-up ranging from B.B. King to Puddle of Mudd and from Jason Mraz to Three 6 Mafia. The fun continues Saturday and Sunday with line-ups including the Gin Blossoms, Three Days Grace, Cake, Big Jack Johnson, Shinedown, Staind, Yellowcard and Blues Traveler. For a complete listing of artists, check out the sweet graphic. From four different stages, the music rolls over thirty-three acres overlooking the Mississippi River. This portion of the Memphis in May International Festival lasts three days and includes more than sixty top artists.

The ending of the Beale Street Music Festival signifies the start of the International Festival with the Costa Rica celebration. You can learn about the exotic insects, animals, sights, sounds, and secrets Costa Rica offers. Along with celebrating the culture of Costa Rica, you can celebrate the culture of Memphis with music, food and fun. Not only is the Festival a great time, it's also educational. The students and teachers in the area can take a virtual journey around the world through the annual curriculum guides, activities, and student competitions that Memphis in May's extensive Education Program offers. This year, there are several contests and programs for students and teachers including the Creative Writing Contest, Student Exchange Program, Best Classroom Competition, Best School-wide Salute and Poster Contest. These International events take place not only in the area schools, but in museums and parks as well. Some of the events for this year include musicians, artists, arts and crafts, performing groups, exhibitions, speakers and dancers.
