Along with nice weather comes the end of this semester's intramural activities. Right now, the only two intramurals being played are softball and outdoor soccer. Unfortunately, these are the last two intramurals for the semester.

Since Jennifer Sullivan took over as interim intramural director in January, her best intramural experience has been volleyball. "It is competitive, yet everyone is there for the social and recreational aspects as well. I never saw anyone take it too serious. As for intramural participation, Sullivan seemed impressed at the amount of students that participate in most of the sports offered. "The majority of the students that participate in intramurals participate in all of the sports", she said. "I would like to get more variety in the activities that are offered so that more students become involved. It is a very good way for students to get together and escape the everyday stress that comes with being a college student at such a strong academic school."

Along with participation, sportsmanship this semester has been great. "There are going to be times when teams become a little over competitive, however, I wouldn't call them a team that lacks sportsmanship," she said. "There is not a day that goes by that I don't see teams giving high-fives to their teammates as well as their opponents and that is really important to me."

Surprisingly, forfeiting was not a very big problem this semester. According to Sullivan, sending schedules out to more members on a team than just the captain leads to a better turnout. Also, having set days for the games helps because students get used to having games on certain days.

For next semester, Sullivan would like to get more students involved and excited about intramurals. "There are a number of benefits that come from participation in intramurals and recreation. Sports in general help you both mentally and physically. What more can you ask for in such a fun environment?" Another thing Sullivan would like to do next year is develop a fitness challenge for both students and faculty. "I went to Eastern Kentucky University and one of my professors designed a personal fitness plan based on the individual," she said. "It allows for people to work at their own pace achieving their personal goals."

"Hendrix students have been awesome as I have gone through the learning process of intramural sports and recreation. I appreciate the many students that have participated in the events and only hope we can double that number for next year," Sullivan said.
