Jennifer Sullivan took over as interim intramural director when the semester began in January. Since then, she has been organizing and getting students involved in the spring semester intramurals as well as participating in other activities such as the Campus Kitty Mud Volleyball Tournament. Before beginning at Hendrix, Sullivan taught fitness and wellness classes at Eastern Kentucky University as a Graduate Assistant. She also worked with the Indiana Golf Association to run Junior tours for children between the ages of five and 18.
"After Erin [Saluta] resigned, Danny [Powell] called and asked if I would be the interim intramural director after Christmas", Sullivan said. According to Danny Powell, director of athletics, the decision had to be quick to prevent an interruption in the intramural program for students returning for the spring semester.
"I knew Jennifer had an undergraduate and master's degree in sports administration and was available immediately," Powell said. After he met with supervisor Rock Jones about the options at hand, he asked Sullivan if she would do the job on an interim basis. "She jumped in and worked well with students and has learned on the job," Powell said.
According to Powell, the College is still deciding how to staff the wellness and recreation area for the long term. "With the new Wellness and Athletic Center coming on line in the fall of 2007, we are working both internally and with outside consultants to determine what our staffing needs for both the building and the program will be once that facility opens," Powell said. Also being considered in terms of staffing is the anticipated growth in both the usage of the Wellness and Athletic Center and the programs being offered.
Sullivan has been asked to come back full-time next year as the Coordinator of Intramurals and Recreation. "I think this will provide some continuity to the program and she can continue to develop her skills in this area," Powell said. "Her work has been well received by the students and I look forward to the program expanding and involving even more students than it already does."
Sullivan's willingness to step into a situation with little preparation is much appreciated. "She has worked hard at both the intramural and outdoor recreation areas and has been eager to help students with other events, such as the Campus Kitty Mud Volleyball Tournament," Powell said. "I'm grateful that she'll be here next year to help us expand the program for everyone."
