Hendrix students planning on studying abroad now have another option to look into, as Hendrix has added Heilongjiang University in China to its list of schools throughout the world with which it has an exchange program. On Wednesday, March 29, three dignitaries from Heilongjiang came to formalize the exchange relationship and take a peek at our campus.
Heilongjiang is a large university of 23,000 students, and is located in northern China in the city of Harbin, with a population of nine million people. Quite different from Hendrix, the university will be able to send up to five students to Hendrix next fall, and Hendrix will be able to send up to five students there next spring. As a school with an established Hendrix exchange program, students studying abroad at Heilongjiang will be able to pay the same tuition and receive the same financial aid as they do at Hendrix. Also, applicants will be competing against other Hendrix students for up to five positions, instead of students around the world.
Dr. Jay McDaniel, Professor of Religion, has had a relationship with Heilongjiang for a few years, and helped connect Hendrix to the East. McDaniel said he attended a conference on philosophy there two summers ago, and met with faculty at the college who were very interested in an exchange program. Heilongjiang previously only had one exchange program with a school in the U.S., and it this is their first exchange with American students.
"I was really overwhelmed with their hospitality and how exited they were to make contacts with us," McDaniel said. "So this past year, I went back with 10 students to Beijing and Harbin and consolidated the agreement.
"We've been able to e-mail each other as friends, and we have quite warm relations," McDaniel said of the faculty and staff he has met from Heilongjiang. He said he appreciated all the help of Ms. Li, the editor of one of the university's journals, Seeking Truth, which he has been published in. Li was one of the visitors to Campus earlier this month, as well as Director Zhang, the director of foreign affairs, and Dean Yin, the dean of the School of Western Studies.
