FCA Offers Unique Ministry for Athletes

For over 50 years the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) has reached out to Christian athletes at college and high school campuses through their unique ministries. In 1995, former Hendrix Coach Chuck Winkelean (Girls Basketball) started an FCA chapter at Hendrix. Recently, FCA has undergone a rebuilding period and has begun to generate more attention.

"FCA is a group of athletic individuals who profess Christ as their savior and come together to form a supplement experience. There are many wonderful religious organizations on campus, but we strive to offer an outlet to students interested an athletic environment." said FCA Sponsor Coach Garrison

Despite recent efforts by students and sponsors at encouraging greater involvement, few students know about the work being done by FCA members. The Hendrix website offers little information on the organization and has the wrong name listed for the faculty sponsor. Although FCA is technically represented on RLC, news and information on group activities are scarce. Several students, when asked about FCA, are completely unaware of its existence at Hendrix.

According to senior Anthony Walker, FCA president, attendance at FCA meetings remains relatively low. Between ten to fifteen people constitute the core members of the group. Walker says about eight to ten people attend regular meetings.

Garrison, who serves as the faculty sponsor of FCA, is now in his second year of working with the group. According to Garrison, most information and news concerning FCA is spread by word of mouth and correspondence with the coaches.

Despite its small size and low profile on campus, Garrison believes FCA offers a wide range of opportunities and activities for students. Every year in the fall, FCA sponsors a special banquet in the Hulen Ballroom. Attendance to this event ranges from one hundred fifty to two hundred. Each year FCA finds a speaker for the event well known to the community. Among the many speakers over the years is Super Bowl Winner Keith Jackson. Along with the banquet, the organization also holds Bible studies, guest lectures, and cookouts.
