On Tuesday, April 4, a Conway woman was fatally shot in the drive-through of Church's Chicken on Oak Street. Stephen McCoy, 38, the victim's husband, has been arrested and charged with capital murder.

According to a Wed., April 5 article in the Log Cabin Democrat, Betty McCoy, 37, had been in Faulkner County Circuit Court earlier in the morning seeking an order of protection against her husband. Her husband "stated it wasn't worth it for him to take off work, he was not opposing (the order of protection)because she wasn't opposing visitation of the children," said Charlotte Garrett, Victim Services Coordinator for the prosecuting attorney's office. The couple have two minor children, she said.

It was reported that at about 11:30a.m, a man walked up to [Betty] McCoy's car in the drive-through and shot her five times at point blank range. The woman's car drifted about 50 feet and came to a rest in a grassy area in the Ideal Bread parking lot.

The article mentioned that her order of protection with an 11:08a.m. time stamp was found on the seat of her vehicle. Betty McCoy was taken to Conway Regional Medical Center, where she died shortly after. Police officers went to the McCoy home, found Stephen McCoy, and arrested him without incident, Spokesman for the Conway Police Department, Lt. Danny Moody said. In the Log Cabin Democrat article, Moody said, "I'm glad it all went so quickly, from a community standpoint. If it doesn't, there's an unsolved homicide where an arrest hasn't been made."

Betty McCoy's records indicated she filed an order of protection because of threats of physical harm. In March, Betty McCoy reported to the police department that her husband had broken her wrist during an argument in February. Pam Foster, who was in the left-hand turn lane at a traffic light by Church's at the time of the shooting, described the incident.

"I saw a man walk up to her car and then pull out a gun. I heard the gunshots and counted three of them," she said. "Then I saw him run to a car and drive away."

Foster said she then pulled into the Church's parking lot and thought about attempting to perform CPR, but was told to not touch the crime scene.

Paramedics arrived about three minutes after the shooting, but at that point there was little they could do.

McCoy worked at Conway Regional Medical Center. Lori Paladino Ross, spokesman for the hospital, said, "Betty was a valued employee of the Conway Regional Surgery Center for over six years. She sat at the front desk and would always greet our staff and visitors with a smile and a kind word. Our hearts go out to her family and children. We will miss her."
