Campus Kitty Continues Tradition of Charity

Next Friday, April 7 will kick off this year's Campus Kitty Week as students gather around the fountain for the Galloway Red Light Revue, and will continue through the following Friday, April 14, when the Miss Hendrix Production and a late-night party close out the week.

While most students look forward to the events all year long, many are unaware of exactly what Campus Kitty does, and how it all works. Everyone knows "it's for charity" but this year the committee is focusing on making sure students know where the money is going and how it is going to be used, and can appreciate the way Campus Kitty makes a difference in our region.

"Our major goal this year was to bring back the emphasis to the charities," senior and Campus Kitty Chair Michelle McKenzie said. "We do want to have fun and raise money, but we've got to focus on why we're doing it."

One of the new events this year is a Charities Fair, in which a majority of the Campus Kitty charities will be available to talk to students about their organizations and what they do, and students will be able to see how the charities' needs will be met by Campus Kitty's help.

"The fair is a chance for students to see where the money they donate to Campus Kitty will be going," senior an Campus Kitty 1st Vice Chair Emily Wells said, who is organizing the event. "People should stop by because it's important to support these charities and show them that we are interested in what they are doing."

Wells said they plan to post the charities' wish lists alongside their station, so that people can learn exactly what the organizations needs are, such as medical supplies, freezers, or computers, and exactly how they are going to be helped.

"A lot of people don't realize that the committee actually delivers the things on the wish lists to the charities," freshman Veasey Hall representative Valerie Sanchirico said. "We don't just write them a check. If an organization asks for books for children, we buy them books, and we take them to them."
