The journeys of students who have studied abroad can now be seen by any student who stops by the Odyssey gallery in Buhler Hall. Thomas Christie, a senior mathematics and international relations major from Little Rock, created an exhibit of 25 photographs from 15 Hendrix students who studied abroad during the 2004-2005 school year.

The opening reception took place Tuesday in the gallery of the Odyssey office. The exhibit shows everything from a Buddhist monastery to a church in Chile. Each photo also contains a reflection from the student who took the photograph. Christie said the reflections range from an explanation about what was going on in the photo to what the student's personal experience was like.

"One of my favorite photographs is of a small white church in Chile. The sky is dark blue which is really striking in contrast to the color of the church," he said.

Christie received around 100 photographs, which he started collecting last October. When he first got the idea, Christie said he approached Dr. Wayne Oudekerk, coordinator of international programs.

"He suggested I apply for an Odyssey grant. I thought was a great way for students to share their experience and as advertisement for the study abroad program," Christie said.

Oudekerk said he was enthusiastic from the start, especially since it offers a way to combine students' artistic interests with their desire to share their life-altering experiences abroad with friends back home.

"I've seen a few of the shots Thomas himself took, and they are show-stoppers. If some of these images don't kindle your wanderlust, you'd better get an EKG," he said.

Christie's project was funded by a grant from the Odyssey Program, a new curricular initiative at Hendrix that coordinates all experiential learning for Hendrix students. The program offers grants to support self-proposed projects by students and faculty in six major categories: Artistic Creativity, Global Awareness, Professional and Leadership Development, Service to the World, Undergraduate Research and Special Projects.
