The Hendrix-in-London group has arrived and adjusted to the new time zone relatively quickly. Classes have begun, and everyone seems to be enjoying what the courses have to offer. There has also been some considerable exploring, and some of the experiences have been enlightening, to say the least.
One group decided to go in quest of pubs, and the report is that they found 12 different pubs in four days. No comment from the faculty member in the group. Students have also gone to plays, musical events, and museums. Some visits to Hyde Park have been interesting. People were viewed sharing their sandwiches with very friendly squirrels, and they listened to speeches at the Spakers' Corner, including one on why men were superior to women, another on God, and so on. The Princess Diana Memorial also received an official visit from some of the Hendrix crew who would have placed a wreath on the spot had they had one with them.
The first official play of the year was The Comedy of Errors, by William Shakespeare. It was well done and managed to communicate its insights and its humor effectively. The students also visited the vast Imperial War Museum with their British Culture teacher and reviewed the enormous number of items and points of interest related to World Wars I and II. Students also have discovered good food and libations at the University of London Union, and the Marlborough Arms has become a somewhat regular spot for lunch, though not on a daily basis.
We hope to send additional updates from our adventures in London and have them written by various students who are here. We will endeavor to send a picture or two, as well, for you to see. If you have questions or a topic you would like for us to deal with, just e-mail HYPERLINK "mailto:arms@hendrix.edu" arms@hendrix.edu, and I will pass it along to an appropriate student (or tackle it myself).
