A Warrior is…fill in the blank. The Hendrix Administration and the Student Senate announced on Dec. 19 they would hold a competition to establish a new Warrior mascot.
A shield has acted as the Hendrix mascot since 2000.
Senior Garrett Sprowls, who is Senate vice president is leading the committee that will name a new visual representation of the Hendrix Warrior.
"So far I have gotten some interesting submissions. I even got a ninja," Sprowls said. "There have been many submissions that incorporate an ancient Greek warrior into their design, though."
All members of the Hendrix community are encouraged to submit ideas and the winning proposal will receive a cash prize and iPod, according to the news release. If multiple submissions of a similar theme are received, the first submission received will earn the prize although all submitters will be acknowledged.
Sprowls' committee will select a mixture of submissions and will then send the ideas on to the Hendrix Senior Staff, the President, the Board of Directors and the Athletics Department.
"I don't expect a new mascot to be in use for at least a year. [The committee] will choose its favorite submissions, and then we have to let the College choose from our suggestions," Sprowls said.
Many different groups must agree on the final product, and Sprowls said he expects the process will require quite a bit of time.
The committee hopes to finalize their favorite submissions by the February Senate Elections.
"Those elections always have the best turnout, and we want to allow the greatest number of students to voice their opinion," he said.
The suggestions voted on by the students will then be given to the administrators.
Sprowls said that one option would not likely become the new mascot, though.
"Squirrels has all but been ruled out by the school," Sprowls said about the mascot option which students have forwarded in the past.
The College rid itself of all Native American imagery in 2000 following Die's suggestion. A group of students suggested the squirrel as a mascot then, but the idea was not well received, Sprowls said.
"I have received a few submissions with squirrels, though," Sprowls conceded.
The person submitting the winning idea or design must relinquish all rights concerning the design. Contest entries must be submitted by Feb. 1 to mascot@hendrix.edu, or addressed to Mascot, Campus Box 3594, Hendrix College, Conway, Ark. 72032. The first entrant of the winning concept will receive an iPod , an iPod stereo unit and a $100 Hastings gift certificate.
