There will be a special election on Tuesday, Jan. 31 to select a new senator for Couch Hall to serve until the end of this term, just over two months away.

The position was left vacant beginning this semester after then sophomore Couch Hall Senator Alex B. Holzinger withdrew from Hendrix College.

Filling the empty position is a weighty task. As Career Services liaison, Holzinger was charged with communicating with Career Services to resolve any constituent concerns with the office.

Veasey Hall Senator Casey Coman emphasized the importance of the position, saying, "I think he had to do something once."

The interim replacement would have to fill the same position, as well as complete other duties expected of Senators, such as rearranging the tables and chairs after the weekly meeting on a rotating schedule.

The only candidate to file for the open position was freshman Chad Sardashti. After being defeated in a previous Senate race, Sardashti is confident in his chances in this election, and is eager to begin a career of service to his Couch Hall constituents.

"I have many close friends in Couch, and I feel that it is my duty to represent them on Senate," Sardashti said. "It's something that I think about before I go to bed every night."

The ambitious candidate has several goals in mind, should he be elected.

"My first goal is to make it to the meeting, on time," he said. Pausing, he added, "No, just to make it to the meeting."

Sardashti hopes to reach out to all Hendrix students, not just his fellow Couch residents.

"Even if you're not a Couchie, you can still come to me with your problems," he said. "I'll let you cry on my shoulder."

The election will be held this Tuesday, Jan. 31 from 9:00am to 5:00pm in the Couch Hall lobby. Only current Couch Hall residents are eligible to vote in this election.
