Everyday's a Holiday (With You)
Esthero feat. Sean Lennon
Make sure that the first time you listen to this song you are alone in your room or some other closed off location. I don't know if it's the happy piano or the booming trumpets or the cutesy lyrics ("You're the crescendo to that melody, that melody I love."), but the first time you hear this song, you are bound to fall in love with the next person you see. It could be your best friend, it could be your best friend's girlfriend. Hell, it could be your Stat professor. Helllooo, Dr. Stanley!
Help!
Dolly Parton
I have to credit this one to a friend of mine who was searching for the perfect mix of cover songs for a mix CD she was making. How she came across this little gem, I'll never know (I mean, how many people own Dolly's 1979 album Great Balls of Fire?). Now, I know a lot of people who would think it a sin against music to say that a Beatles cover is better than the original. But I just can't help myself. Twangy guitar, old country harmonies…Dolly has taken a classic and put her own personal spin on it. My father is probably disowning me at this very moment.
Handle With Care
Jenny Lewis and the Watson Twins
Anyone who knows me knows that I'm obsessed with Rilo Kiley like only a crazy person can be. So you can imagine how long I've been anticipating frontwoman Jenny Lewis's solo album, Rabbit Fur Coat, which finally drops this month. "Handle With Care" was originally recorded by the Traveling Wilburys (George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison and Jeff Lynne) and the out of print, original CD is fetching over $50 on eBay. Maybe I'm biased, but I think Jenny does it justice with help from indie all-stars Ben Gibbard, Conor Oberst, and M. Ward.
My Darling
Wilco
It was a late night viewing of Gilmore Girls reruns (shut up) that suddenly made me remember how much I loved this song. The first few bars of pretty piano and plucking guitar are the perfect introduction to Jeff Tweedy's tranquil voice. "Go back to sleep now, my darling." This song is perfect for a snowy day…or a rainy day…or maybe just any day where you feel like lounging around in your pajamas till dinnertime.
