We've Got Spirt, Yes We Do

Cheerleading and dance team tryouts always take place in the fall with a hired outside instructor to teach the tryout material. Once the participants learn the tryout material, they practice until the day of tryouts. According to Laurie Smith, the cheerleading and dance team sponsor, "The girls worked very hard in the heat with no air conditioning. They are all very committed to trying out for either cheerleading or the dance team." Two off-campus judges come to watch the candidates perform the tryout material and each candidate gets evaluated and then the selections are made. Once the selections are made, the group meets, plans the practice schedule, and gets to work preparing themselves for the first home basketball games in November.

Hendrix has had a cheerleading squad for several decades, but the dance team has only been around for 11 years. The dance team was started by a group of Hendrix students that were interested in bringing out school spirit. The dance team has evolved from a pom squad to a dance team with a real dance background and much more experience in dance.

So what is the difference between the cheerleading squad and the dance team? The cheerleaders perform more athletic type routines, such as stunting and tumbling, as well as the cheers and chants that get the athletic teams pumped up and ready to play. The dance team supports the cheerleaders and the teams vocally from the stands and then entertains the fans at halftime. The purpose of both groups is to generate spirit in the crowd and to support the Warriors.

This year, the cheerleaders are senior and captain Kaete Archer, sophomore and co-captain Amanda Mooneyham, seniors Marshay Love and Amy Mareno, sophomore Merry Miller, and freshmen Hattie Martin and Bethanie Edwards. The dancers are senior and captain Morgan Honea, seniors and co-captains Andrea Morell and Allison Walker, seniors Sara Forgy and Katie Hamilton, junior Ainsley Echeverria, sophomores Alexis Reddig, Katy Kirk, Joi Chen, and Laura Leipold, and freshmen Melissa Campbell and Jesse Brandenburg.
