Poet to Read Monday in Reeves Recital Hall

When poet Mark Jarman reads from his poetry Monday night, Hendrix professor Hope Coulter will be sitting in the front row.
Coulter teaches two poetry classes at Hendrix and has become a fan of Jarman's work.

"He writes about religion, but from a religious perspective that is not normally represented," Coulter said. "He writes a lot about looking for God and not necessarily finding him."

Coulter said she first read Jarman's work on an online poetry website - www.poems.com. Jarman writes in the New Formalist style, and Coulter said the structure of his poetry and his selection of themes compelled her to read his work.

In his eight works of published poems, Jarman has developed a style that adheres to the formal rules of poetry while addressing contemporary topics. Coulter mentioned a favorite poem of hers that discussed the author's love of surfing in perfect rhyme and meter.

Jarman also teaches at Vanderbilt University and has published numerous books discussing the role of poetry.

Jarman, who studied at the renowned Iowa Writer's Workshop, will perform Monday at 7 p.m. in Reeves Recital Hall.
