The cozy-looking Cottage on Washington Avenue will soon be transformed into a horrifying house.

In addition to the crazy costumes and celebratory ecstasy that usually defines Halloween at Hendrix, students will be celebrating the anticipated holiday in a new way this year. The Campus Kitty Committee, which traditionally only sponsors events around Campus Kitty Week in the spring, has bumped up its activities a semester early. The Committee has planned a haunted house for the last week of October as a fun and frightening way to raise money for local hurricane relief efforts.

"We felt the need created by the hurricanes was too great to ignore until spring," senior and Campus Kitty Publicity Chair Courtney Rogers said.
A 57-year old tradition, Campus Kitty is a weeklong fundraising effort that, through various campus events, raises money for nonprofit organizations in the Conway and central Arkansas areas.

Campus Kitty's haunted house will be geared towards the Conway community as a whole, according to senior and Campus Kitty Chair Michelle McKenzie.

"The idea is not only to involve Hendrix students but also the rest of the community, especially high school and other college students," McKenzie said.

The haunted house will be located in the Cottage next to the Public Safety building, and will run from 8:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. Monday, October 24th through Saturday, October 29th, with the exception of Friday the 28th due to Ghost Roast and a much-needed break for the volunteers. Admission will be $5 and is open to the entire campus and surrounding communities.

In the interest of involving as many students on campus as possible, the Committee has had each residence hall develop a theme for and staff its individual section of the haunted house.

"Our theme is going to involve tarot cards and gypsies telling peoples' fortunes when they walk through the door," Raney Hall representative Maggie McKinney said.

"Veasey's room is based on a 'Scary Movie' theme...but I don't want to give away any surprises. You'll have to come out next week and see for yourself," Veasey Hall representative Valerie Rose Sanchirico said.
