The Campus Center Planning Committee, chaired by Dr. Joyce Hardin, Dean of Students and Vice President for Student Affairs, is finalizing criteria for a new Campus Center. The blueprints should be available for proposal by the end of this coming spring. According to Hardin, the ideal location for the new complex would be that of the current Campus Center; whether this necessitates a demolition of the entire complex or just an elaborate renovation of it is unclear and undecided. Still undetermined is the source of financing for this $8 to $12 million project that will replace, among other offices, the Burrow, the Bookstore, and the Student Affairs Offices.
Aside from the current center's direct need for newer dining room facilities and more accessible restrooms, a main reason for the new Campus Center is that "[Hendrix needs] a place where people could develop socially; develop leadership – intellectually," Hardin said. One goal for the new center is the inclusion of "office suites," where student organizations can meet, share resources, and "communicate in an unofficial way," Hardin said. Plans for the center include a new Post Office, Dining Services Facility, Academic Advising/Support Center, Religious Life Office, KHDX studio, a coffee shop, and ballroom style programming space.
The Committee is still wrestling with the many problems brought about by on-campus construction, most immediately, who will fund this project? In light of Administration's recent budget cuts, this question is sure to spur debate among students and faculty alike, though Hardin expresses a hope that "once one key donor invests in the idea, others could follow."
