Observance of King, Kwanzaa planned for January

On January 21, 2002, from 5:30 p.m.- 6:30 p.m., the Office of Minority Student Affairs and Recruitment, the Diversity Council, and the Association for Women Students will be sponsoring a Martin Luther King, Jr. Discussion, Dessert, and Coffee. The topic will be "A Realistic Look at the Question of Progress in the Areas of Race and Gender Relations on the Hendrix Campus."
The purpose of the Essay Writing Contest is to encourage the Hendrix community to think critically about Dr. King's legacy of peace and justice. The essay theme is "Dr. King's Work: What we can do to complete his dream at Hendrix College."
The essay must be between 750 and 1,000 words and must be typed and double-spaced. Include your name, e-mail address, and campus address and turn in to Carmen Hardin by January 14, 2002, at 7:00 p.m.
All essays are to be judged on the author's knowledge of Dr. King and his work in the Civil Rights Movement, originality of ideas, development of point of view, insight, clarity of expression, organization, and grammar.
All entries will be on display and selected essays will be read at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Chapel Service on January 21, 2002.
First place essay contest winner will receive a gift basket worth $50.00 and second place will receive a gift basket worth $25.00.
The purpose of the Art Contest is to give students the opportunity to reflect on Dr. King's dream of races and cultures living together in unity. The theme is "Shades of Us."
Artwork may be done in any medium. Include your name, e-mail address, and campus address and turn in to Carmen Hardin by January 14, 2002, at 7:00 p.m.
All artwork will be judged on overall impact, effectiveness in conveying the theme, and originality.
All entries will be on display in the Dining Hall during the Martin Luther King, Jr. Chapel Service on January 21, 2002.
First place art contest winner will receive a gift basket worth $50.00 and second place will receive a gift basket worth $25.00.

Since the Kwanzaa Feast was successful last year, we would like to sponsor the program again with participation from the entire Hendrix community. The program will be on Monday, January 14, 2002. If you would like to dance, play an instrument, sing, showcase your artwork,read a poem, or present a dramatic presentation, please e-mail your name and area of interest to hardinc@hendrix.edu by December 7, 2001.
